Resident in Counseling
Hi, I’m Katy! I’m an artist, dancer, movement educator, and Resident in Counseling based in Richmond, Virginia. I earned my Master’s in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University and am currently working toward licensure under supervision at Phases Therapy as I continue developing my clinical work.
I approach therapy as a space for slowing down, noticing, and reconnecting with ourselves, our bodies, and the experiences and stories we carry within. My style is warm, relational, and grounded in curiosity. You don’t need to arrive with clarity or the “right” words. I believe therapy is a collaborative process of making meaning together at a pace that feels supportive and sustainable.
I work with individuals navigating a wide range of experiences, including trauma, emotional overwhelm and lability, identity development, relationship patterns, and major life transitions. I also bring a strong background in substance use and recovery work, informed by lived experience and my role as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist. This perspective deepens my understanding of resilience, adaptation, and change, while remaining one part of a broader clinical focus.
My clinical approach is integrative and grounded in relational and person-centered frameworks, along with a body-aware perspective that considers the connection between our lived experiences and our internal nervous system. I am interested in how survival strategies can become embedded over time, and how they can be gently shifted through awareness and deeper and more personal understanding. Depending on what feels supportive, I may also incorporate experiential and creative approaches, such as gentle movement, imagery, or metaphor, as a way to support experiences that aren’t always easily accessed through words alone.
I value authenticity, autonomy, and collaboration. I practice with cultural humility and an awareness of the broader systems that shape mental health and lived experience. My intention is to offer a space that feels steady, respectful, and human. Our sessions can be a space where you can show up as you are without needing to perform or translate your experience.
My own life is rooted in creative and reflective practices and finding joy through play. I spend time dancing and moving, writing, and engaging in practices that help me make meaning, both internally and in connection with something larger than myself. I’m drawn to contemplative and metaphysical traditions such as astrology and Reiki as part of my own ongoing process of reflection, curiosity, and grounding. If I’m not in a dance studio or therapy room, I’m probably outside with my feet in the dirt, or on the couch snuggling with my two cats Booger and Nelly.
