It is wonderful to meet you here on your journey. My name is Mike, I am a Supervisee in Social Work and practicing nurse. I am a VCU graduate with a training background that reflects serving both diverse clients and mental health concerns. I am grounded in attachment and believe the therapeutic client- clinician relationship can lead to healing and growth.

My approach to therapy encourages exploration, cultivates awareness, and invites vulnerability. I practice from an Object Relations framework that reflects upon how we internalize early experiences and ways to offer our present selves corrective solutions. I am culturally informed as a second generation Asian-American navigating the complexities of duality and belonging. I am trauma informed particularly with grief/ loss, chronic illness, and medical practices. If you are seeking an affirming therapist that can challenge growth, then maybe we will be a good fit. Naturally, we will enter this process as slowly and gently as you need.

Outside of work I enjoy cooking, pickleball, gaming, role playing, and finding new coffee shops around RVA. I am passionate about social justice, racial justice, LGBTQ+ identities, and neurodiversity.

First, we will create a map of your world and learn how you have successfully survived thus far. My practice will center you and your needs in the community you live in. I know that you are your own best expert. I will listen and empower you. I am passionate and driven by community care. It has helped me immensely in times I have needed it and I am happy that I get to use my own skills to pour back into my town. It is my life’s goal to empower strong individuals to strengthen communities. I have struggled coming from a family that did not meet my needs growing up and found out during my own treatment that I am a bit of a nerd for emotional regulation and trauma healing. I am queer and gender non conforming and my hair changes constantly to reflect that horrible stereotype that nonbinary people have blue hair but whatever lol.

I started my Music Education degree at James Madison University, dropped out several times and never finished. I got more nerdy about feelings and social justice and wanted to dig in more with people. I got my Bachelor’s of Social Work and Master’s of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University. I’ve trained in Solutions Focused Brief Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Crisis Intervention. I love utilizing techniques from Somatic therapy, EMDR, mindfulness and creative expression. When I am not doing therapy, you will find me making or listening to music, slummin it on the couch and binging television with my doggies, or practicing yoga.

I received my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2023 from Adams State University, and I’m excited to help you navigate life’s challenges. Hello! I am Peighton, a resident clinician based in Virginia Beach! I earned my M.S.Ed in Clinical Mental from ODU and am currently working towards my PhD in Counselor Education while I complete my residency. I am currently being supervised by the wonderful Danielle Bolster who can be contact at danielle@phases-therapy.com.

I have experience working in different community counseling settings, especially working with survivors of domestic violence and the queer community. I have been working within private practice for the last year and have had the opportunity to further serve the trans and gender-non confirming community. When working with clients, I find it crucial to integrate systemic considerations especially regarding power, privilege, and oppression. I love working with my clients to re-author their narratives to create a full, flexible, and compassionate understanding of self. I believe that despite barriers, we all have the capacity to live authentic and meaningful lives.

I am aware of how the many inequalities, especially created by white supremacy, ethnocentrism, and colonialism, create what feels like insurmountable odds in our communities, especially for those belonging to minoritized identities. I believe that through resistance and community, we can work together to assert our human rights. While I hope that this is attainable goal, I recognize the many hardships that come with existing and trying to resists from within the system. I also recognize that cultural humility is a life-long learning journey that requires much care and vigilance, especially as a white identified person. While I aim to be the most educated ally I can be, I am still actively unpacking my white privilege. That being said, I heavily rely on Queer Theory, Feminist Theory, and Critical Race Theory to conceptualize the world.

As for my other identities, I am non-binary, bisexual, and neurodivergent. I really enjoy gaming, drawing, and the rave scene. My favorite games include: Hello Kitty island adventure, Baulder’s Gate 2, Marvel Rivals, and any non-capitalist city simulation game. My favorite EDM genres are: techno, acid, trance, and hardstyle. I also have two dogs! Their names are Matcha and Parfait and they are a Golden Retriever and Australian Sheppard respectively.

I am a queer, autistic mammal who is curious about folks’ inner worlds and backstories, and passionate about supporting their healing and growth.

Adults and teenagers in colonized Virginia and Maryland can meet with me for individual, virtual therapy.

In our sessions you can expect me to show up on screen as my authentic, awkward self. We can bundle up in blankets and snack together, get on the floor to play with our pets, or turn our cameras off  – whatever is nurturing for you that day. I tend to be quiet and warm, with bursts of passion about interests and justice! I don’t view myself as an expert, but rather I’m a strongly empathetic, insightful, and nerdy guide with valuable lived experience and ongoing learning.

My support for therapy participants is non-pathologizing, non-carceral, trauma-informed, culturally humble, and unique to each person. I view my connection with you as a sacred honor.

While I am curious and passionate about all kinds of folks, some of my favorite therapy participants to work with are the queers, autistics, PDA’ers, ADHD’ers, people struggling with relational, religious, and sexual trauma, highly sensitive people, plural systems, and folks who are described as self-aware but struggle with processing through emotions on a deeper level.

In terms of therapy modalities, I enjoy primarily using Internal Family Systems (IFS). Depending on your needs and preferences, I also pull from neurodiversity-affirming Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), narrative therapy, expressive arts therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I plan to receive further training in Somatic Experiencing and other experiential, relational, bottom-up approaches.

I’m critical of the mental health industrial complex, and am working towards decolonizing my therapeutic approach.

Outside of healing work, I enjoy wandering in the woods, painting, crafting (especially with natural materials and trash), talking to my cats, eating rich-tasting food, decorating my home, practicing earth-based spirituality, and playing video games like Red Dead Redemption II and Animal Crossing.

I utilize family systems theory, attachment theory, and person centered techniques to help clients understand how their past relationships and experiences impact their current lives. Having a non-biased and accepting therapeutic relationship is something that I strive for and it’s important
to the healing process. With younger clients, I utilize non-directive play therapy techniques that allows the client to feel comfortable and in control of their environment.

Consent is everything to me and I seek to create an environment where clients feel safe (enough), affirmed, and supported, by using a strengths-based approach that centers compassion and a deep respect for the therapeutic relationship as a powerful tool in growing in healing and recovery.

My own experiences as a trauma survivor and person with an eating disorder have taught me that one of the most powerful and centered feelings we can have as humans is to that of inner knowing. My wish is that therapy serves as a container for you that allows exploration of your sense of self, connection to your needs and boundaries, your own powerful sense of inner knowing, and the experience of viewing your life with self-compassion. 

As a therapist, my values of anti-oppressive practice, harm reduction, neurodiversity affirming support, trauma-informed care, sex positivity, queer liberation, and a Health at Every Size/ anti-diet are the foundation to which I center my work. I approach all therapy with an understanding of the ways our lived experiences, the environment around us, and the systems we live in impact our mental health and who we are as people. Together we will explore self-compassion and a develop a growing sense of connection to our own needs and boundaries.

I have spent over a decade as a survivor advocate which has formed a passion for working with survivors of trauma and especially with people who have experiences of complex trauma, C-PTSD, and childhood trauma. I also have a passion for working with people who are recovering from disordered eating, diet culture, body image distress, and who are seeking a sense of body liberation and recovery within their lives.

I let all my clients know that you may occasionally be greeted momentarily by an appearance of one of my two cats, Mr. Meow or Serenity, as well as my dog named Mabel. I consider myself a pretty casual/cozy therapist who believes in the importance of honoring our needs and with that I want you to be able to show up to therapy as you are and I promise to do the same!

Often because of events we cannot control, some people may experience trauma while others feel the effects of anxiety, depression, and other mental health difficulties.  I strive to help clients make sense of their traumatic experiences and to develop coping skills for times when life’s circumstances lead us through challenging times.  It is my goal to walk with clients on their journey, assist them to rebuild their resilience and provide a safe, confidential space where clients can emerge from suffering into healing and restore their quality of life.

I am a resident in counseling in the state of Virginia and a graduate of Old Dominion University and I enjoy working with children, adolescents, and adults. I also enjoy working with various diverse populations, including the Latinx populations due to my familiarity with Latinx culture.  I am a trans-, LGBTQIA+, and neurodivergency-affirming counselor and have experience working with clients in the polyamory and kink community.
