Verrell Mayfield
Master’s Level Intern
Greetings! My name is Verrell, and I am a counseling intern based in Suffolk, VA. I am currently pursuing my M.S. Ed. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Old Dominion University. I am being supervised by Natalie Thomson, who can be contacted at natalie@phases-therapy.com.
I’ve had the pleasure of working in an inpatient setting, where I adopted an integrated approach to support individuals on their unique journeys. I’ve met clients who are navigating the challenging waters of anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, past trauma, and grief. What I’ve come to believe is that it’s essential to take a holistic view of mental health, recognizing that our mental well-being is deeply interconnected with our physical, emotional, social, and spiritual health.
I genuinely enjoy bringing this holistic perspective into my counseling sessions. It allows me to appreciate the complexity of each person’s experiences and challenges. By recognizing how these different aspects of life intertwine, I can provide a more comprehensive understanding of what my clients are going through. This approach not only fosters a more profound connection but also helps me offer more tailored interventions, leading to fulfilling and sustainable growth on their path to healing.
I’m passionate about working with diverse groups, and I firmly ground my practice in values like authenticity, transparency, and growth. I have a special commitment to supporting individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+, those who are neurodivergent, and anyone with non-conforming gender identities. I strive to create a safe, compassionate space for everyone I work with, where they can truly feel seen and understood. When I’m not in the therapist’s chair, I relish the chance to immerse myself in books, proudly embracing my identity as a bookworm. I value quality time with loved ones and find joy in creative activities, such as building with Lego sets and completing puzzles. Baking and discovering new experiences also bring me joy, as they help me explore different perspectives and reaffirm my sense of self.
